7.2. Identifying Abbreviations and Acronyms

Problem

You want to identify to users what an abbreviation or an acronym represents.

Solution

Include the full expansion of the abbreviation in the page content.

Usually, one encloses the abbreviation in parentheses after the full expansion. Include this at least the first time that the abbreviation appears on the page:

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 was released as a World Wide
Web Consortium (W3C) recommendation in December 2008.

Using abbr

Use the abbr element to programmatically associate the full expansion with the abbreviation. The abbr element is an inline element that can be used within block elements or other inline elements:
