Wiring Up Bricktronics Equivalents

We’ve assumed you’re using the Bricktronics Shield and the Bricktronics Motor Controller throughout the book, but you don’t have to. Not only can you recreate them on breadboards, the Bricktronics Motor Controller and the Bricktronics Shield are open source hardware created by Wayne and Layne, LLC (co-authors Adam and Matthew). That means that we have released the files needed to create the hardware, and legally relaxed the rights so you can use the files. Depending upon the exact license used, the rights can vary. These are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License. Legally, this means you may copy, distribute, and display them (and any modifications or “derivative works” you make) if you give credit to Wayne and Layne and you must also license any modifications or derivative works under this exact same Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License. This means you can go to the Bricktronics website, download our PCB files (Figure 10-1), and do what you’d like with them. You can send them to a manufacturer to have boards made, or you can try to mill or etch your own. You can download the files, mash them up with other boards, post them all over the Internet—as long as you preserve the license.
