10. Advanced Techniques > XBee Wireless Modules

XBee Wireless Modules

XBee is the name for a series of radio modules (Figure 10-18) from Digi International. There are now a large number of modules sold under the XBee line, as well as other radio modules sold by other companies with the same form factor. A small disclaimer: because there are so many XBee options and only so much space we can devote to this topic, this summary only scratches the surface. If you’re interested in this topic, Digi has been doing a great job providing hobbyist resources (http://examples.digi.com is a great place to start). There is also an excellent book, “Building Wireless Sensor Networks” by Rob Faludi that goes in depth with the Series 2 XBee modules.

XBees are used often in Arduino projects to wirelessly connect Arduinos to each other, or to a computer. While many computers have Bluetooth built in, it is not a standard option to have XBee support built in, so to connect to a computer using an XBee, you’ll need a piece of hardware to do it. There are small standalone bridges that can connect an XBee to your computer over USB, and you can also use the official Arduino XBee Shield to connect an XBee directly to your computer.
