3. Arduino Interlude > History of the Arduino Project

History of the Arduino Project

The Arduino project began in 2005 as an educational tool for a design class at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, in Ivrea, Italy. The goal was to lure nontechnical people into the realm of electronic design. If an artist seeks to build an interactive sculpture, for example, he or she doesn’t necessarily want to learn advanced electrical engineering concepts along the way. Similarly, non-EE students were often shut out of the realm of microcontrollers thanks to the steep learning curve. Therefore, the nascent Arduino team (Figure 3-2) resolved to make their microcontroller inexpensive, easily programmed, and supported by a community of builders.
