3. Arduino Interlude > What Is OSHW?

What Is OSHW?

“Open source hardware (OSHW) is a term for tangible artifacts—machines, devices, or other physical things—whose design has been released to the public in such a way that anyone can make, modify, distribute, and use those things.”

Opening sentence of the open source hardware definition 1.0 (http://freedomdefined.org/OSHW)

The open source hardware community (Figure 3-4) is a group of people who share the designs for creating new physical things. They release the designs, allowing anyone to copy, change, mashup, and learn from their designs. To fall under the endorsed open source hardware definition, the released designs must even have no restrictions to stop other people from making and selling copies of the actual item! Many technical artifacts in our society are protected, both physically and legally, from people finding out how they work. Proponents of open source hardware seek to enable anyone to learn from their designs.
