Hack 23. Free Your Page Elements from Their Traditional Space with CSS3 Transforms

CSS3 transforms give you the ability to add perspective to your HTML elements. Use CSS3 transforms to arrange your elements in the 2D or 3D space.

HTML generally is a linear presentation, as all the elements are essentially rectangles. Transforms allow you to take advantage of the different planes to give your design perspective. There are two types of transforms: 2D and 3D. Let’s look at the options provided in the 2D transforms:

Skew

Defines a 2D skew along the x- and y-axes

Scale

Provides a 2D scale on the x- and y-axes

Rotate

Provides a 2D rotation at a defined degree

Translate

Translates (or displaces) the element at a 2D defined location
