Artificial Intelligence Supported Non-Verbal Communication 1989; Kreifeldt & McCarthy, 1981; Cabon, Co- blentz, & Mollard, 1990). See McFarlane (2002) for a full review of interruption and multitasking literature in HCI. It is clear from the research described up to this point that multitasking is widespread in both the business and research world. It is also evident that such behaviour needs to be controlled since the advantages of multitasking are evident in theory, but the negative effects it may cause out- weigh the prospective positives in many cases. The prospects of efficiently juggling multiple tasks have clear advantages in the modern work and research environment. Hence we conclude that it is necessary to remove the negative while retaining the positive aspects of this phenomenon. Most research to date has focused on preventive measures against multitasking but we believe that a more effective solution may lie in supporting collaborative interactions by instead reducing the reliability and scale of information transfer can vary significantly between applications, contexts and scenarios (Snowdon, et al., 2004). It is impor- tant that the communication modes employed in real world human-to-human communication are implemented in virtual interaction environments if the goal of efficient and effective interaction during collaborative situations is to be reached. These modes include verbal, visual and non-verbal communication of all known forms. Verbal communication has received much development success in current online interaction applications in the last decade with the advent of voice over IP communication. Visual modes such as one-to-one video calls and conferencing have also received much attention and with the recent increases in bandwidth and internet connection speeds, applications for video calling are popular among businesses and research institutions. The support for non-verbal modes of communication
