Chapter 5: Robotics and Problem-Based Le... > THE PARTNER SCHOOL DISTRICT'S INTEGR... - Pg. 102

Robotics and Problem-Based Learning in STEM Formal Educational Environments calculator opens up the educational use of the CEENBoT to a vast number of teachers and stu- dents, who are already using graphing calculators in their STEM coursework. The SPIRIT technical team is also working to make the CEENBoT as environmentally friendly as possible and the project is sensitive to the need for environmentally friendly features. Two rap- idly changing technologies that are being ad- dressed in this pursuit are battery chemistries and RF communication protocols. The first prototypes of the CEENBoT platform used Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) batteries, as do many other electronic devices in the educational settings (such as many toy robots). NiCd battery technology has some drawbacks including memory effects due to crys- tal growth from overcharging, and disposal con- siderations when the battery is no longer useful. For example, for every 1,000 CEENBoT's utiliz- ing a 9-ounce NiCd battery-pack it would have Figure 4. CEENBoT with graphing calculator THE PARTNER SCHOOL DISTRICT'S INTEGRATION OF
