Performance Conversations 123 Not every promise is appropriate for public display. Some promises, such as those involving financial or personnel deci- sions, may be sensitive or must be kept confidential. But in most workplace meetings it is appropriate to make a record of every time someone agrees to do something, and note what the person will do and when he or she will do it. Going a step farther to post certain promises for team outcomes also helps focus attention on the desired results. It can take courage to go public with promises, because it makes both success and failure visible. In part, that is the rea- son to do it. Public displays bring successes and failures into the view of people who are interested in improving the group's performance. It also sets people up to have more effective Closure Conversations (Chapter 5).
