Career Champ Profile: Ian

The architectural firm Ian worked for was relocating to another state. He could follow them if he wanted, and keep his job, but Ian really didn’t want to move. He contacted Lance, a colleague at another firm, and asked if they could meet. Over coffee, Ian did a great job of describing his strengths and what he was looking for in his next job. He also showed Lance a list of architectural companies he was researching.

Lance knew the local architectural industry well and was able to provide Ian with names of nine other people to contact for networking. Lance also talked to Joan, his boss, about meeting Ian, in case they needed to add another architect to their team in the near future. Joan agreed to meet with Ian.

Before their interview, Ian talked again with Lance, studied the firm’s Web site, and googled articles on the Internet to learn more about Joan’s company and the projects they were working on. When he walked into the interview the following week, Ian took with him a resume emphasizing his relevant experience and a portfolio showcasing a few examples of his best work.
