CHAPTER 7: Basic Research Skills > Become Information Literate

Become Information Literate

As you go through your academic career, you will be asked this question more and more frequently: “Are you information literate?” But what does the term information literate mean?

The American Library Association defines information literacy as “the set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and [to] have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.” Becoming information literate means not only that you can find information, but also that you can use critical thinking skills. Critical thinking, put simply, is problem solving.

You will realize how important it is to become information literate in all aspects of your life. Many people, including educators, are not information literate. Get a step ahead and make sure that you are. Be able to find the information you need.
