SSHCommandLineandAdvancedClientUse·Chapter11 263 Frequently Asked Questions Q: Are there any SSH clients other than PuTTY? A: Yes. As discussed in Chapter 4, there are other clients. PuTTY is just the most commonly used in Windows environments. It is an open source free utility with robust features. Q: Are there different versions of PuTTY? A: Yes, you can download the source and modify it, as long as you could leave the required license and copyright information. Q: Why do I need to add the PuTTY directory to the system path variable to use the command line options and tools? A: You don't. If you do not add the directory to the path, you then have to cdo the folder to use the utilities and options. This is inconvenient, but possible. If you add the directory to the path, you can call the commands from any directory. Q: Do all the command line options work with all the utilities? A: No. Some are specific to the utility; however, most are the same across all utilities.
