394 Chapter17·InstallingandConfiguringGFINetworkServerMonitor Introduction The last GFI product I will be covering in this book is GFI Network Server Monitor 7.0. GFI Network Server Monitor is designed to automatically scan the servers on your network for failures or for anomalies that could lead to a failure, and then alert you to the issue before the phones start ringing. Hardware and Software Requirements Believe it or not, neither the GFI Web site nor the instruction manual provides any hardware require- ments for GFI Network Server Monitor. Therefore, I can't really tell you what it is you are going to need. What I can tell you is that in my lab I am running GFI Network Server Monitor within a virtual server. The physical server has an Intel Core 2 Quad processor and 4 GB of RAM. I have allocated 1 GB of RAM to the virtual machine, and it seems to run fine in spite of the fact that I am also running the host operating system, and at times, two other virtual machines. Software Requirements for the GFI Network Monitor Server Although GFI Network Server Monitor's hardware requirements are not stated, its software requirements are. The software requirements are as follows: Windows 2000 (with SP4 or later), Windows XP Professional, or Windows Server 2003 Windows Scripting Host 5.5 or later (This is included in Internet Explorer 5.5 and later.) Version 1.1 of the Microsoft .NET Framework Any servers you plan on monitoring will require an agent to be installed. The software require- ments for servers being monitored are: WMI Windows Scripting Host 5.5 or higher (Included with Internet Explorer 5.5 and higher) Notice that I did not list any operating systems among the software requirements for machines being monitored. That's because GFI Network Server Monitor can monitor a wide variety of Windows and Linux operating systems. The operating systems that are officially supported are: Windows 2000 Professional Windows 2000 Server Windows XP
