230 Chapter8·DataIdentificationandSearchTechniques you should rely on trained or certified individuals when using EnCase eDiscovery to ensure that your search has been properly constructed and can withstand scrutiny if challenged in court. Autonomy IDOL Autonomy is a software company that specializes in information access. Founded in 1996 and based on technology researched at Cambridge University, Autonomy is one of the leaders in the conceptual search market space. Autonomy's core technology is IDOL, the Intelligent Data Operating Layer. IDOL allows Autonomy's solutions to search across the enterprise, utilizing legacy and advanced techniques, and access more than 400 different data repositories, including laptops and desktops. It can search and analyze more than 1,000 file types, is language independent, and is compatible with all operating systems. With the purchase and integration of e-discovery market leader ZANTAZ in 2007, Autonomy is moving aggressively into the e-discovery space. Autonomy IDOL is a mathematical and statistical-based conceptual and contextual analysis search platform based on the mathematical works of Thomas Bayes and Claude Shannon. The technology allows a variety of search methods, including legacy methods such as keyword search. Combined with conceptual search capabilities, IDOL is designed to identify potentially relevant data with greater precision and recall than solutions relying solely on legacy search techniques or thesaurus-based conceptual search engines. IDOL fully indexes data to ensure a complete, FRCP-compliant search without altering the metadata, ensuring forensically sound data. It can also search all ESI types, including voice and video sources. IDOL is positioned as a "pan-enterprise" search technology that combines advanced search technology such as conceptual analysis with legacy methods such as keyword and Boolean searching. The technology is designed to access all of your data sources across the enterprise, allowing an FRCP- compliant search that will cover all data sources, from Microsoft Office documents, to e-mails, voice- mails, and videos, including an ability to search databases, ECM solutions, archives, and SharePoint environments. The IDOL platform gives you the ability to search for and identify data across the enterprise from a single search interface, reducing the time, risk, and manual processes that would typically be required. In addition to the IDOL platform, Autonomy offers several other solutions in the e-discovery space, including Aungate Legal Hold, which offers legal hold management and preservation and collection capabilities, with the added benefit of the IDOL platform underneath to search for and identify potentially relevant ESI. Additionally, Autonomy has a strong role in the processing, analysis, review, and production space with its Introspect line of products. The one fear that users may have with Autonomy's technology is that conceptual analysis does not yet have the court vetting and backing that keyword search has. Although this is true, it is also apparent that the courts are beginning to notice the availability of technology using conceptual analysis. Though it may be some time before conceptual search is a standard in court cases, this technology already has wide acceptance in the enterprise market, with many leading corporations relying on this type of search technology to manage enterprise data and knowledge management. Although it is proven and tested in the enterprise, the technology is still not fully vetted in the court systems, though it has been used in hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of cases.
