Love With It 1986

Stevie Wonder and producer Quincy Jones, Wonderland Recording Studios, LA 1987

What was the first song you wrote?

“Lonely Boy”—never recorded.

Your first instrument?

Harmonica, and then piano.

How did your parents contribute to your life as an artist?

Well, my mother sang in church, and both of my parents were singers. They were never recorded, but they could hold a note.

What have you gained from your long relationship with engineer Gary O?

Most of all, I think he’s a person who has been eager in creating a marriage between music and technology—being able to record it on tape. He has the ability to understand what I come up with musically and I can share my ideas with him—he knows how I imagine it sounding and can make it a reality. It’s like him watching my ears. And, of course, he’s been a very best friend. We’ve grown a lot together and a lot of the time has been the most significant and precious time.
