1: Marketing Theory: Real Life > Basic Assumptions

Basic Assumptions

In order to begin the planning process, you will have to make some assumptions about your business:

• Are you an innovator or an imitator? Innovators create new products or services to meet a new need. Imitators refine or improve existing ideas that have proven successful.

• What are your geographic limits for distribution? You must set boundaries for your operation. Many times, your financial limitations will dictate these imaginary boundaries. Make sure you can adequately serve the areas you have selected. One of the worst things you can do is to be overly aggressive and then disappoint customers with poor performance. Also consider the cost of gasoline or other travel expenses, which may make it unprofitable for you to deliver your service to specific areas, even though you can sell there.
