There is no way of knowing which is correct, so do not assume. Instead, go back to the "source," not a coworker or friend, to get clarification and to clear up the inconsistencies. I had a supervisor correct some of my work because he did not understand what was going on, only to discover that I was correct. After discovering what had occurred, the work had to be redone.
