In transactional analysis terms, the coach will comfortably and confidently maintain adult- to-adult interactions. "I am not the expert, and I don't need to be the expert" is a mantra that the most effective coaches will feel very comfortable saying. They do not need to know the answer, or to demonstrate their effectiveness through an impressive theatri- cal performance. By being detached from the outcome, the coach holds the coachee fully accountable for their own development and keeps ownership squarely resting on the coachee's shoulders. The phrase "detached from the outcome" does not imply a lack of care since, as we described above, passionate curiosity remains crucial. It is easier to let go if you are an external coach than if you are an internal coach operating within the organizational system. When you are part of organizational politics and you have your
