CHALLENGING COACHING Building rapport The final column in the traditional coaching temple is build- ing rapport. This states that effective coaching is built on strong empathy between the coach and coachee, which leads to trust and rapport. In therapy, Carl Rogers believed that through respect and empathy the client will be at the center of the helping process and be best placed to feel safe to explore issues. This feeling of safety and security is fundamental in a therapeutic setting, working to help a sensitive and dysfunctional client. However, in coaching we work with robust and functioning people who can be pushed, challenged, and provoked.
