Only one thing gets you down, and hence stressed, more than work. Not working.
Paradoxically, one of the most stressed periods of any life is when you don’t have to worry about the nine-to-five because for whatever reason you’re no longer in paid employment.
People in low-paid, menial jobs are far more anxious than thrusting Type A folk. They have little control over their working life and there’s nothing less relaxing than lack of control. Those made redundant or who are ‘between jobs’, women who have had children and opted to stay at home – anyone basically who doesn’t get paid (note, I didn’t say who doesn’t work) is vulnerable to the tension of the ‘no work’ phenomenon. So what’s the answer?
