Digital cameras have a relatively low intrinsic dynamic range, making most images relatively high-contrast. High contrast often causes burned out highlights or swamped-looking shadows with no discernible detail. A relatively new way to increase dynamic range is to take multiple photos of a single subject using differing exposure values and to merge them into a single, high dynamic range (HDR) image using purpose-built software or plug-ins designed for use with other image processing programs.
