• Hints are procedural execution instructions inserted into the SQL text.
• Hints may be rarely or broadly used to circumvent normal Optimizer processing.
• When hints are used, they must be maintained and should periodically be reviewed to ensure that they are still needed when new releases of the database and the Optimizer are in use.
