Chapter 6. 3D Digital Art

Chapter 6. 3D Digital Art

This and the rest of the chapters in this book now move into the realm of 3D digital art. As mentioned in Chapter 1, 3D art has many advantages over other forms of digital art in that the artist creates objects and settings that can be reused or seen from different angles. This gives 3D digital art a distinct advantage over 2D digital art. Because the artist can render a 3D image to 2D, the 3D artist is capable of changing items and angles in the composition without having to repaint the entire scene. All he has to do is to render the scene again to get a new image.

When creating in 3D, the artist is doing more than just creating a picture. In essence, the artist is creating a virtual world or environment. Instead of painting a scene, the artist is more like a theater designer in that he is moving actual objects around. The 3D objects are called models and they are created in 3D modeling programs like Maya. Once created, the models can be used over and over again and they can be modified to create new models.
