Creating vertex attribute data with a text editor or in code is difficult, error prone, and tedious. Many “modeling” tools exist for creating 3D data ranging from vertex attributes to animation, physics, lighting, and other effects. Modeling is the term used by 3D content creators to describe the process of developing 3D data called models. Table 7.1 compares popular modeling tools.
Table 7.1. Popular 3D Modeling Tools Compared
Table 7.1 lists a tiny subset of available tools. A tool not listed might meet specific needs. Wikipedia explores the comparison more comprehensively at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_3D_computer_graphics_software.
The models in this book were produced with SketchUp or Blender and sometimes a combination of the two. Examples need to be accessible to the widest possible audience; SketchUp and Blender are both free and available for Mac OS X.
