Preface

Preface

During the planning stages of the previous edition of this book, we asked the members of the online Poser community which questions were most frequently asked by members of the Poser community. The responses helped us formulate the topics that we should address in the first edition. Interestingly enough, the topics requested fell into beginning, intermediate, and advanced level skills.

With this latest edition, Practical Poser 7, we have moved some of the beginning material to the CD-ROM that accompanies this book. You’ll find it there in HTML format. We added some additional intermediate to advanced topics in the body of the book, including information on joint parameters, animation, new morphing features, enhanced texture creation, and more.

This book assumes that you have reviewed the Poser 7 Reference Manual and Poser 7 Tutorial Manual that ship with Poser 7 before you attempt some of the tutorials in this book. We have tried to go light on theory and heavy on practical use of the most requested topics and procedures.

The book begins by getting you up to speed on intermediate-level to advanced-level skills that you need to know. You learn in a logical manner how to create and customize clothing, characters, and textures. You’ll also learn how to use lights and cameras, and how to create and save your own light and camera sets to the Poser Library.

We then move to higher-level topics, mainly covering the features that you’ll find in the other Poser rooms. You’ll learn how to prepare photographs so that you get the best results in the Face Room. You’ll also learn how to create and save custom faces in the Face Room. You’ll learn how to use the Hair Room to add hair to Poser clothing or props and how to pick up hair colors from underlying textures. You’ll also learn how to work with the various types of Poser clothing and the differences between conforming clothing, dynamic clothing, and hybrid conforming/dynamic clothing. Finally, you’ll learn how to decipher and build materials in the advanced Material Room view.

Some of the most frequently asked questions involve creating and customizing Poser clothing. Although these are advanced-level skills that often require software other than Poser, it is a topic that is of great interest and need to Poser users, and we will address this need in the final chapters of the book. First, you’ll learn how to use magnets to create morphs in Poser. You’ll also learn the steps involved to export and import morphs to and from an external morphing program. Through several chapters, you’ll learn the procedures involved in modeling a simple piece of clothing, how to create UV maps for common clothing articles (shirts, skirts, and pants), how to assign materials in clothing, and how to group them correctly so that your models work correctly in Poser. You’ll also learn how to save different types of Poser content into the Poser libraries so that they work properly.

You’ll also learn about the basics of animation and get an introduction to the new layered animation feature in Poser 7. In addition, you’ll learn what makes the Poser rendering engine work and how you can enhance your Poser renders so that they look their best.

The techniques that you learn in this book will help you get up to speed very quickly with the questions that Poser users ask most. We are also open to suggestions and additional questions that can be covered in future editions of this book and will watch the various forums in the online Poser communities for questions or comments from our readers.
