Lights and Shadows

Lights and Shadows

Q1:Q: How does a light probe work?
A: The purpose of a light probe is to simulate the lighting conditions in a photograph or movie. Imagine the light probe as an invisible hemisphere that surrounds your scene.

The area in the center of the light probe is the area of the hemisphere that is directly overhead at the highest part of the hemisphere. The outer edges of the light probe are the lowest parts of the hemisphere, which encircle the scene at floor height. The top of the light probe determines the lighting conditions at the back of your scene. The bottom of the light probe determines the lighting conditions at the front of your scene.

Q2:Q: Can I use an AVI or MOV file for an image-based light probe?
A: Yes. One way to accomplish this is to set up your IBL light in the Material Room first, using the IBL wacro. During this process, the wacro will prompt you to select an image. After this process is complete, your IBL light will be configured properly. All you have to do afterward is disconnect the Image Map node and replace it with a Movie node (New Node > 2D Textures > Movie).
Q3:Q: Can I make a light that looks something like a movie being projected onto a screen?
A: Yes. After you create a spotlight, go to the Material Room, and change the color of the light to white. Then attach an Image Map node (New Node > 2D Textures > Image Map) or a Movie node (New Node > 2D Textures > Movie) to the Diffuse channel. Check the Auto Fit option in the Image Map node to fit the image in the spotlight.
