Extending Spotify with Third-Party Apps

Spotify is more than just a database of songs, however. It also offers an “open” platform that other companies can use to offer additional services to listeners, in the form of free apps that can be added to the Spotify interface.

For example, Rolling Stone magazine offers an app that recommends music you might like, as shown in Figure 1.4; Songkick offers an app that tracks and notifies you of local performances from your favorite artists. These third-party apps add a lot of functionality to Spotify and help you expand your listening.
