What’s Next

Today we’re living in the digital world, and music lovers are foraging through a variety of options available for finding, storing, and listening to their favorite music. That’s why you bought this book, of course, to learn more about what’s available and maybe even make some decisions about which way to go.

But where is the music industry going tomorrow? That’s a tough question to answer, other than things are likely to be even more different in the future.

That said, I can make a few easy predictions. First: The adoption of digital distribution will continue apace. That’s just a continuation of trends, of course; physical CD sales continue to decline while digital downloads continue to rise. In fact, it’s possible that physical music distribution will fade away completely at some point—maybe not next year, but possibly within a decade.
