Using Popular Plug-Ins

A vocal track can be both subtly and significantly altered by applying one of several Cubase plug-in effects. These plug-ins help remove hiss and sibilance from vocals, as well as add a bit of presence to the sound.

Compressor

When it comes to the recording process, know that vocalists can sometimes be maddeningly inconsistent, not only in their pitch and vocal inflections but also in how they approach the microphone. Don’t be surprised to see the vocalist backing up and leaning forward throughout the recording, which plays havoc with your input levels. If she’s too close to the mic, the meters go into the red; if she’s too far away, the meters might not move at all. Short of nailing the vocalist in place precisely 6 inches away from the mic (a near-perfect distance), how do you cope with this?
