An envelope is a level that changes over time. Some envelopes are dedicated to specific functions (for instance, Triangle II has three dedicated envelopes), while others can be freely assigned to any function. (PSYN II and Z3TA+ have a range of freely assignable envelopes.) In this book I will refer to pitch envelopes, filter envelopes, and so on. These terms are intended to explain how the envelope is used; the modulation destination of an envelope will determine its name.
While we’re talking about terms, you will often see envelopes called EGs, or envelope generators. There is no difference between an envelope and an envelope generator—they are just different terms for the same tool.
