Chapter 5. Recording Vocals > Experimenting with Vocals

Experimenting with Vocals

What you’ve learned so far in this chapter should be enough to have you recording excellent vocal tracks. Even though a lot of recording engineers are very particular about their methods for recording vocals, sometimes you have to break the rules to achieve the best sound. If this means the singer holds the microphone during recording, yells into the microphone from across the room, or screams into the microphone at close range, then so be it. The studio should be looked at as a place to be creative and not just a place to accurately capture live sound.

Most studios have many different types of microphones at their disposal. You may not have that luxury, but keep in mind that changing the microphone is one of the standard ways to change the sound of a vocal recording.
