I read this book while trying out 30-day full feature download version of Ableton Live 8.  It quickly brought to light the unique approach and very efficient user interface of Ableton that sets it apart from other tools.  Based on what I learned I was able to make the decision to purchase the product.  I highly recommend this book if you are researching or learning to use the product.

but more of a really good quickstart compared to the Live manual (which IS comprehensive).  This book is excellent for getting a fast overview of the the devices in Live where the manual may go on ad nuaseum, this is short and sweet, albeit too short in some places that you are left wondering why certain topics were included at all.  A few times reading it I was left wondering why there were no examples of what they were talking about., but most of the time I was left with a "oohhhhhhh".  I've been trying to use Live on and off since version 3 and it was always put on the back burner for what I thought was more intuitive software (Reason, Logic..), after reading this book I now see what I was missing and that's taking the time to dig just slightly beneath Live's surface to see how powerful and flexible it really is.  I was at a music store a few months ago and the guy referred to Live as a toy...I keep thinking about that comment as I read and tried out what was described in the book and all I could think was just how short sighted he was and I was previously all those years.  This book helped me see that what the manual makes seem like a infinitely deep hole of features is actually a series of sophisticated design presented with simplicity of use to allow the user to freely use the tools as they see fit.  Kudos to the book for that....

I wanted something that has lots of hands-on examples and training, and ended up with a too technical manual that defines and explain each bit. I guess the name of the book says it: Comprehensive Guide. I am looking for something else.
