What’s Your Story?: Storytelling to Move... > Chapter 2. Truth Stories Versus True...

Chapter 2. Truth Stories Versus True Stories

"The truth is rarely pure and never simple."

—Oscar Wilde

"Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened."

—Winston Churchill

How many times have you been sitting at your desk or in a conference room and heard the phrase, "Let me tell you a true story?"

We're always curious about his phrase. Does it mean that the other stories the speaker has told you in the past weren't true? Does it mean you should pay more attention to the story because it's been verbally flagged as true? Or is it just that the speaker really wants us to understand how important his or her point is? We're not sure, but we know that a more compelling phrase would be, "Let me tell you a truth story."
