33. What Is a Medium-Sized University? > Private Master’s-Level Universities

Private Master’s-Level Universities

Many private institutions also fall into the regional or master’s degree category. Numerous Catholic universities, for instance, fit into this category, including Villanova, Seattle, Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, Marquette, Creighton, St. Louis University, Salve Regina, Fairfield, Xavier, and Gonzaga universities. Non-Catholic, mid-sized institutions include Ithaca, Hood, and Emerson colleges, as well as Chapman, Butler, Quinnipiac, Drake, Belmont, and Elon universities.

These private institutions offer the same sorts of degree programs that their public counterparts provide: the traditional science/liberal arts offerings along with career-oriented degrees. These schools can be popular with students who want to attend a university but not one that is too large. Many of these schools have student bodies between 7,000 and 12,000 rather than tens of thousands.
