Counselors at Private High Schools

Are counselors at private high schools any better prepared? Generally yes.

As you just learned, respondents in the Inside Higher Ed survey agreed that the most effective resource for students in the college admission process are counselors at private high schools.

Private schools typically do not require counselors to have master’s degrees, but as you’ve already learned, these degrees are useless in preparing the degree holders to help families with college choices.

Anecdotally, I can tell you that the counselors at private schools that I’ve encountered or heard about excel in expanding their students’ universe of college possibilities. Most teenagers in the United States end up attending schools within 100 miles of their homes, but these colleges aren’t always the best or most affordable options. Private counselors are more likely to know about colleges and universities throughout the country, which gives students at these high schools an advantage.
