Consequences of Uninformed Counselors

Ill-trained counselors, regardless of their school setting, can unintentionally create problems for families. Here are just a few examples:

Counselors typically invite local college admission reps, who have their own conflicts of interest, to be the presenters at financial aid nights. Imagine, for instance, a rep being candid and sharing with a high school audience that his university’s average financial aid package is pathetic. That’s never going to happen.

Counselors steer kids away from excellent schools with high price tags because they assume that families can’t afford them. What they don’t understand is that for some bright students, an expensive school can sometimes end up costing less than a public university.
