9. Looking Across State Lines for a Bargain

No place has proved more popular with bargain-hunting nonresidents than flat, cold, landlocked North Dakota.

Can you imagine living in a state where the number of students graduating from high school is less than 7,400? If you can’t, you must not live in North Dakota.

Don’t snicker. The lack of students in the Peace Garden state can present you with an opportunity. Few teenagers include universities in North Dakota on their college dream lists, but maybe they should.

Schools that lack rankings mojo—and that is the majority of the nation’s colleges and universities—have to try harder to attract students. Unlike elite public institutions that, in some cases, turn away the majority of their applicants, schools like those in North Dakota are working hard to attract students wherever they may live. One way that schools beneath the radar do this is to make it more affordable to attend.
