Part II. Increasing Your Admission Chances > 26. Diversity Blueprint

26. Diversity Blueprint

At a time when more and more low-income and minority students are preparing for college, it is disturbing that many of our most prestigious colleges and universities are turning away from them.

—Kati Haycock, president of The Education Trust

When my son was in high school, the teenagers in his carpool got free college advice from me. The advice wasn’t always solicited, but the four kids did listen politely.

Madison was one of those teenagers who sat in the backseat of my old Volvo station wagon while we navigated rush hour traffic on one of San Diego’s congested freeways.

Madison had an above average grade point average, but his SAT scores were just average. Madison, who is a musician, happened to be one of the most interesting and mature teenagers I had ever met. He was thoughtful, articulate, and engaging. And he struck me as a resilient kid who could leave San Diego for college and not crumble. I thought there were some private schools, which evaluate applicants holistically, that would love to have a kid like Madison.
