Chapter 12. Time Management

If you read only one chapter in this book, this should probably be the one. Organizing your time at work means organizing what you produce and how you develop as a professional. No other skill will help propel your career forward as much as this because it’s the skill that leads to all other skills. I’ve seen employees get fired or repositioned to the most hideously unpleasant positions because they had such poor time management skills that they found it impossible to be productive for more than three hours a day. Other high-performing employees get stalled in their careers at the “career journeyman” level (a position that has different titles in different companies, but what I will call “just short of a manager”) because they fail to consistently spend time to extend their skills (sharpen the saw), a key dimension in time management. Conversely, virtually all high-ranking executive and technical leaders get to where they are by having some strong skills in time management, whether they achieve this through formal study or come by the talents intuitively.
