The certificate usually takes between 18 months and two years to complete. It is free for people between the ages of 16 and 18 and employers pay the fee for people who are above this age. During the apprenticeship the employer is obliged to pay at least the minimum rate for an apprentice. The apprenticeship focuses on providing support in the classroom under the direction of a teacher, and enables apprentices to develop their working knowledge and understanding of how to promote the development of children and enable them to achieve their full potential. Apprentices learn about legislative guidelines, policies and curriculum requirements, and develop their numeracy, literacy and information technology skills to help them to carry out their work more effectively and efficiently.
