Get a new user ID and password if necessary; tidy up your desktop; file away (no, don't just throw away!) old files belonging to your predecessor; check out the software packages available to you and seek assistance if there's anything you're unfamiliar with. You'll also need to make sure you're set up with an e-mail address if appropriate. Employers frequently overlook this when taking on a new recruit; don't hesitate to remind them. Get comfortable in your new work environment. Is your chair, for example, correctly adjusted? Back and hand/wrist problems due to incorrect working postures account for a considerable amount of the time people take off sick. If you have any back problems then consider asking your new employer if they could supply (or if they'd mind if you supplied) a chair that would be better suited to your needs. Good employers take such matters seriously and should be only too happy to oblige.
