Once you get into a senior position much of your time will be spent in negotiation. Thinking about how you negotiate is key for your performance and for the terms and conditions of your post. Here are some insider tips on the delicate art of negotiation.

So you’ve marshalled your arguments, and both sides have laid at least some of their cards on the table. The fact that you are both still there means that you have tacitly agreed that your opening position is negotiable.

You have listened for signals that show where there’s room for manoeuvre or compromise. At some point comes the time to make a proposal. Do it sensitively and tentatively. Don’t look as if you are rushing. Imagine if someone selling you something came up with a proposal to discount the price before you had even asked. You’d smell a rat.
