Just about every line of work has its own vocabulary or lingo, and IT is no different. As a technician, you need to know the lingo covered in this section so that you can communicate with others.
The brains of a computer, where all the processing of data and instructions happens, are contained in a central processing unit (CPU), which is often called the processor. The processor is a group of complex electronic circuits integrated onto a single package. This package or housing generally holds one or more processors and is commonly called a chip. The processor plugs in to a motherboard inside the case of a computer. Processors are rated based on a number of characteristics, so it’s important to know what these characteristics are, especially when comparing different computers. They vary by type, design, supporting components on the motherboard (commonly called the chipset), the number of pins, and more. You cannot plug a processor into just any motherboard. Instead, the processor must be compatible with the motherboard.
