Chapter 2. Compatibility Issues and Comm... > Identify Basic Compatibility Issues

Identify Basic Compatibility Issues

When you are working with computers, it’s important to recognize that all systems aren’t created the same; some of the components just don’t play well with others. However, by identifying compatibility issues, you can correct the problems and improve overall system performance.

A common issue arises when you try to expand or extend the capabilities of a computer. Most computers are expandable, allowing you to add capabilities by adding more expansion cards. Expansion cards plug into open expansion slots in the motherboard, and these slots connect the boards to one of the system buses, which connect major computer components together. As you’d expect, smaller motherboards have fewer expansion slots, and larger motherboards have more. One of the basic compatibility checks to consider when adding an expansion card to a computer is ensuring you have room. This task includes ensuring that a free expansion slot is available and also ensuring that the size of the expansion card will fit in the available space.
