This chapter reviewed design models, best practices, methodology, and virtualization for data centers in the Cisco enterprise architecture. The data center architecture is based on a three-layer approach consisting of the core, aggregation, and access layers. The core layer provides a high-speed Layer 3 fabric for packet switching. The aggregation layer extends spanning-tree or Layer 3 routing protocols into the access layer. The data center access layer provides the physical-level attachment to the server resources, and operates in Layer 2 or Layer 3 modes, often with either an EOR or TOR design. Care needs to be taken when scaling STP in the data center and managing the total number of logical interfaces and virtual ports in an STP domain. EtherChannel technologies and service module designs are options for scaling the bandwidth and density of the data center aggregation layer.
