Learning goals

At the end of this lesson you should be able to:

  • switch between Datasheet and Design view;

  • know when to use the following data types: Text, Memo, Number, Date/Time, Currency, AutoNumber and Yes/No;

  • create a new table in Design view;

  • delete a column from a table;

  • add a column to a table;

  • change the data type of a field;

  • add a new field;

  • view a table’s indexed field(s);

  • add and remove indexed fields.


New terms

At the end of this lesson you should be able to explain the following terms:

Design ViewA view in which you can display and change the organizational structure of your table.
Data TypeThis determines the kind of data that can be entered in a field, and how Access treats that data.
Datasheet ViewA view of a database table where you can see information presented in rows and columns, with several records visible at the same time.
Indexed FieldA field that a table can use to find and sort records. Access automatically makes primary key fields indexed fields. You can index other fields if required.
