Objective 5.1: Design and Deploy Auditing and Discovery

Exchange mailboxes often host an organization’s most sensitive data. You can configure Exchange so that access to this data is logged in such a way that you can see who accessed it and when it was accessed. Exchange has a remarkable number of options for recording how it manages information. This objective teaches you about some of the ways you can access this metadata.

This objective covers:

  • Administrator audit logging.

  • Mailbox audit logging.

  • Message tracking.

  • Protocol logging.

  • Discovery searches.

  • IRM logging.

Administrator Audit Logging

You use administrator audit logging when you want to have a record of all of the commands used by messaging administrators within your organization. Administrator audit logging allows you to track the use of Exchange 2010 administrator tools in EMS, EMC and the Exchange Control Panel. Administrator audit logging is enabled by default in new deployments of Exchange Server 2010 with Service Pack 1.
