Chapter 15. Creating Development Tests

Chapter 15. Creating Development Tests

Developers are an integral part of the testing process, although they might not always agree on this point. The quality of the product that a developer delivers to the test team has a direct, positive impact on overall quality, schedule, and cost. A better product equates to less rework, fewer builds, and reduced verification of rework. In addition, it is often much more difficult and costly for a tester to find a bug in your code than it is for you to root it out during development. This is because the development process (and experience) is unique to the developer; no one will ever be as close to the operation of the code as the original developer during the initial development. It is for this reason that developers are perceived as being so close to the code that, given the proper training and tools, they should be able to squash the vast majority of bugs before (or as) they happen. Therefore, developers are, and for the foreseeable future will be, given their fair share of the testing process—whether they want it or not.

This chapter is the second and final chapter on testing and stabilizing an application. The first, Chapter 14, “Define and Evaluate a Testing Strategy,” dealt primarily with the creation and analysis of testing strategies and plans. This chapter covers the tasks that developers, not testers, undertake to create and perform development-specific tests. You will first examine how you design and implement good unit testing. You will then take a look at the process of doing a code review. Next, you will walk through how to perform integration testing of components. Finally, you will end the chapter by looking at how you should approach troubleshooting, evaluating, and fixing bugs in your application.
