Chapter 4. Configuring DNS Server Settings and Replication

Chapter 4. Configuring DNS Server Settings and Replication

This chapter covers the following subjects:

  • Configuring DNS Server Settings: Each DNS server has a Properties dialog box associated with it from which you can configure a large number of server-specific properties. This section describes the more important settings in detail.

  • Configuring Zone Transfers and Replication: For DNS to function properly in your domain, the various DNS servers must communicate with each other and synchronize their zone data; changes made at one server must appear in a timely fashion at other servers. This section shows you how to ensure that these transfers take place properly and troubleshoot common problems as they happen.

Chapter 2, “Installing and Configuring DNS for Active Directory,” introduced you to the Domain Name System (DNS) and its importance with regard to the functionality of Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). You learned how to configure the various types of DNS zones and their usage with respect to AD DS functionality. This chapter continues the discussion of DNS by showing you how to configure various DNS server settings and then follows up with a discussion of the various types of zone transfers and replication.
