Chapter 17. Managing Certificate Templates, Enrollments, and Certificate Rev...

Chapter 17. Managing Certificate Templates, Enrollments, and Certificate Revocation

This chapter covers the following subjects:

  • Managing Certificate Templates: This section introduces the various types of certificate templates used with Windows Server 2008 R2 and shows you how to configure options provided with these templates and enable their use for enrolling certificates from your certificate authority (CA) servers.

  • Managing Certificate Enrollments: Windows Server 2008 provides several ways in which users can enroll for certificates. This section shows you how to configure autoenrollment, web-based enrollment, and smart card enrollment; it also shows you how you can enforce the use of smart cards on your network.

  • Managing Certificate Revocation: It might often become necessary to revoke a certificate before its validity period expires for reasons such as compromise. In addition, it is important that applications and devices are able to know if a certificate has been revoked. This section discusses the procedures you must know with regard to certificate revocation.

Chapter 16, “Installing and Configuring Certificate Services,” introduced you to the concepts of public key infrastructure (PKI) within Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS), including the installation and configuration of certification authority (CA) servers and their settings. You learned how to perform maintenance activities including backup and recovery of certificates, keys, and the AD CS database. This chapter continues the discussion of AD CS and shows you how to configure certificate templates and keys, various methods of certificate enrollments, and certificate revocation.
